Lost Gulch Overlook

Overview

Lost Gulch is an incredible overlook in Boulder. I'd say it's your best bet for a mountain overlook near the city. However, it’s very popular (for good reason!). This spot draws crowds because it is a really good place to watch sunset. The sun goes down right over the mountains, and it’s beautiful.

Location

Lost Gulch Overlook is located about 20 minutes from Boulder up Flagstaff Road. Here's the location on a map

Permit Requirements

None required.

Pets

Pets are permitted at Lost Gulch bust must be on a leash. Lost Gulch is a popular spot, and it is likely that we will encounter other dogs and people. There is also not much space at the overlook. For this location, I usually recommend having an option to take a few photos with your dog and then leave them in the car (weather dependent) or with a friend.

Weather and Seasons

Lost Gulch is open and accessible year-round.

Accessibility

Lost Gulch Overlook requires a short walk on VERY uneven, rocky terrain. If you are not comfortable or are not able to navigate boulders and rocks, I would not recommend picking this location. If you are afraid of heights, this is also not the location for you.

Parking

There is a parking lot right at the base of the overlook. Parking is free for vehicles registered in Boulder County and $5 otherwise.

Other Notes

  • Lost Gulch is a very popular spot, especially at sunset.
  • If you want to do this location, I highly recommend picking a weekday.
  • The overlook is beautiful at all times of day, not just sunset. However, this spot is knowns for sunset and arguably one of the best spots for sunset in Boulder!
  • It's about a 5-10 minute walk from the parking area to where I like to shoot.
  • There are no restrooms at this location
  • Alcohol and glass containers are prohibited at this location.
  • If you're doing 2 locations, Lost Gulch pairs well with Chautauqua or Walker Ranch Trail.

Reasons to love this location

  • One of the best mountain overlooks near Boulder
  • Only requires a short walk over rocks
  • It's beautiful all times of year
  • Great spot for sunset
